On Thursday, December 15, the Panama Canal delivered B/.2,494.4 million to the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, as surplus, transit tonnage fees and payment for services rendered by the State, corresponding to fiscal year 2022.

Aristides Royo Sánchez, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Minister of Canal Affairs, and Ricaurte Vásquez, Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, presented the check at the Office of the President of the Republic. Dr. Royo emphasized that this amount “demonstrates that the Canal is a public enterprise that produces profits for the collective benefit. The profits of the Panama Canal are not for itself, they are for the benefit of the people through the delivery to the Executive Branch”.

In fiscal year 2021, the contributions totaled B/.2,080.6 million. This year, the contribution surpassed this figure with an additional B/.413 million.

The Canal’s annual contribution is accompanied by a great impact on Panamanian society. The Canal invests in the protection of the water in its watershed by training specialists and experts who help science grow in Panama. The waterway also carries out human development programs such as the Citizen Action Laboratory, Land Titling Program, Environmental Economic Incentives, Environmental Youth Network, among others. On the other hand, the dissemination of the history and operation of the road maintains a flow of information through all communication channels, such as Canal TV, El Faro magazine, official communiqués and social networks.

With the direct and indirect contributions that the Canal provides to our country, the mission of the interoceanic waterway to contribute sustainably to the prosperity of Panama through a valuable human team, connecting production with global markets and providing value to its customers is fulfilled.
