The President Roberto F. Chiari Library received a donation of 26 books on the history of the Panama Canal from Mr. Joost Brands Smit.

The donated collection focuses on the construction of the interoceanic waterway, its logistical, economic and military importance, as well as the life of the inhabitants of the former Canal Zone.

The specimens are in excellent condition; some are more than 100 years old.

Digital versions (in blue) can be accessed through the virtual library portal.

If you wish to see the titles physically, visit the President Roberto F. Chiari Library in Balboa, building 704 (Ascanio Arosemena Training Center), open to the general public from 7:00AM to 3:30PM Monday through Friday.

  1. My father Lenoard Goldsmith, Came to Panama in 1946 to organize Canal workers and teachers. He stayed at the Travoli Hotel and spoke to 7000 people at the Oympic stadium. We have some clippings and some other material. Would you like it? I will be in Panama City for 1 day – June 19th
we could meet for lunch? Or some time before returning to airport for 6:30 flight to LA, USA.
