The passage between oceans through the isthmus is such a powerful concept, that all the expressions of human genius that develop here bear its mark. Among them, art allows us to know the interoceanic waterway as an object of love and passion. In the pages of literature, we fall in love with the stories of great effort, in canvases, the magnificent colors of its landscape and in the architecture of its buildings we recognize the past.

The Panama Canal is at the same time muse, scenery and character of numerous creations. It can be appreciated in the history of Panama’s artistic production, popular themes of heroic deeds, courage and sacrifice around the inter-oceanic route.

In addition to playing a leading role in the country’s art, the Canal is also a generator of culture. The success of 22 years of Panamanian administration is the manifestation of a culture of progress. Panamanians have shown the world that the Canal’s culture is honest, competitive, responsible, reliable, transparent and loyal.

A culture of maintenance actively sustains a century-old infrastructure, and the cultivation of science provides a solid foundation for all decisions made.

The Canal’s ecosystemic benefits provide enormous potential for new generations of Panamanians. Nature, the inspiration for a thousand poems and songs, gives us forests that protect water, food and shelter. It provides opportunities for sustainable tourism that adds value to a route that is much more than just ships.

Culture and tourism are two ways to connect the heart with the Canal. In this edition of El Faro, we share works and activities that reflect the inter-oceanic and welcoming character of Panamanians.

Together we are Panama.
