52 years ago, a global movement began to raise awareness about the vulnerability of our planet to risks such as deforestation, water and soil pollution, climate change and overpopulation, among others. It is Earth Day, and this date seeks to make visible the problems that have been accentuated since the industrial revolution.
The call for the protection of our planet is every day; however, every April 22nd, the protagonism is more notable. Therefore, the Panama Canal, from its platform as a leading institution in world trade and organizational model at the national level, joins this effort to protect the Earth.
In this year 2022, the motto of the celebration of Earth Day is “Invest in our Planet“, precisely so that companies and organizations in general, are committed to sustainable development in their daily practices.
In this sense, the Panama Canal has launched a water program, valued at more than B/.2,000 to ensure water supply for more than two million people, as well as for its operations. Likewise, it has undertaken the transition to the use of cleaner energy through hybrid floating and land-based equipment.
The waterway emphasizes investing in its assets to make them sustainable and environmentally friendly. It also rewards and encourages customers who have implemented technologies to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on their vessels. This is a joint challenge to become a carbon neutral organization by 2030.
